Boston Divorce FAQ

In Massachusetts, each county has slightly different requirements as you move through the stages of divorce. This is why it is important to have our experienced attorneys at your side.

At The Massachusetts Family Law Group, we assign each divorce and family lawyer to a specific region and set of courthouses. When we work in the same places, we know the procedures in that court and how each judge sitting in that court handles most types of matters. That helps to avoid costly setbacks and delays in the divorce process.

With more than 40 years of combined experience, our lawyers can answer all your questions related to divorce, support and child custody in Boston and throughout eastern Massachusetts, such as:

  • Can I get an increase in child support because of the extra cost of raising a teenager? There are several factors that can be considered in setting a child support order, and issues such as your specific parenting schedule, ages of the children, attribution of income, a child with special needs or aptitudes, extraordinary medical or other expenses may warrant a modification. There are hundreds or arguments that we've made. Contact us if you are interested in pursuing a child support modification.
  • What if my husband is trying to get fired so that he won't have to pay alimony? He may think that he's the first clever character who's tried that approach (but he's not). Our attorneys know how to help you show his disingenuous acts. We'll often get the judge to attribute income to your husband. That means support would be calculated on what he could earn – not necessarily on what he does earn.
  • Now that we are getting divorced, why doesn't my wife have to work? Alimony is typically awarded to a stay-at-home spouse to allow her or him to continue living the lifestyle she or he was accustomed to during the marriage. However, a variety of factors are considered. Hire an attorney to protect your rights during divorce.
  • My spouse is using child support money to buy a new car. Can I stop this? Normally, a child support obligor is not permitted to order how funds are spent, but if you have concerns about how your spouse is spending child support money, we'll show you how the judge views these types of matters.
